Choosing the Right Level for You

How to determine your starting level:

Take the quick self-assessment:

  1. You've never encountered this topic or it's been years
  1. You have basic understanding and can apply foundational concepts
  1. You have solid experience and understand not just "how" but "why"

Topic-specific guidance:

Many Boosters include a "Who should take this Booster?" section explaining the assumed knowledge level and who would find it most valuable.

When in doubt, start lower: It's better to find a Beginner Booster too easy (you'll fly through it quickly) than to struggle with an Advanced Booster that assumes knowledge you don't have. You can always move up.

Don't get stuck at one level: Even experienced professionals benefit from Beginner Boosters when learning a new topic, and Beginner professionals benefit from Advanced Boosters when they have unique responsibilities.

Creating a Progression Path

As you develop mastery in a skill, follow a natural progression:

Building Public Speaking Skills (Example Path):

  1. Start with Beginner:
  1. Move to Intermediate:
  1. Advance to Advanced:
  1. Deepen with specialized Boosters:

Each level builds competence, and the progression takes weeks or months—perfect for skill development.

Difficulty and Learning Plan Alignment

Your 90-day personalized learning plan is built by GapFix AI based on your level and goals. Plan lessons are typically:

  • Beginner plans: Mix of Beginner and Intermediate lessons building foundational skills
  • Intermediate plans: Mix of Intermediate and Advanced lessons, deepening and broadening expertise
  • Advanced plans: Primarily Advanced lessons focused on specialized expertise and leadership

Your plan level is independent of Booster difficulty levels. You might be in an Intermediate plan for leadership but do Beginner Boosters on technical skills, or vice versa.

Mixing Difficulty Levels

Don't stick to one difficulty level. Balanced learning mixes all three:

Scenario: Developing data analytics skills

  • Beginner Booster: "Excel for Data Analysis Basics" → Foundation
  • Intermediate Booster: "Identifying Trends in Sales Data" → Application
  • Advanced Booster: "Predictive Analytics for Strategic Planning" → Mastery
  • Back to Intermediate: "Communicating Data Insights to Non-Technical Stakeholders" → New context

This mixed approach prevents boredom, ensures retention, and develops well-rounded capability.

Using Filters to Find Your Level

In the Boosters library, use the Difficulty filter:

  1. Tap "Filter"
  2. Under "Difficulty Level," select:
  1. Combine with other filters (Category, Type, etc.) to find exactly what you need

Filtering tip: Start broad (all difficulties) to see what's available, then narrow by difficulty once you find relevant topics.

Difficulty Recommendations

GapFix recommends Booster difficulty based on:

Your profile: Your role, experience level, and stated goals Your learning history: The Boosters you've completed and how you rated them Your plan level: If you're in an Advanced learning plan, you'll see more Advanced Booster recommendations Your goals: If you selected "Deepen Expertise," you'll see more Advanced recommendations vs. "Learn Basics"

Don't feel obligated to follow recommendations. Override them if you want something different.

Pro Tips for Difficulty Progression

Refresh on basics: Even experts benefit from occasionally revisiting Beginner content. Use Beginner Boosters as quick refreshers or to explore new angles on familiar topics.

Challenge yourself strategically: If you're comfortable with Intermediate, try one Advanced Booster monthly to push your thinking.

Gap-fill: If you realize you're missing foundational knowledge that an Advanced Booster assumes, pause and take a Beginner Booster before continuing.

Teach others: The ability to explain something at the Beginner level shows true mastery. After completing Advanced content, try explaining it simply to someone less experienced.

Track your growth: Look back monthly at which difficulty levels you're engaging with. Growth means progressing to harder levels.

Troubleshooting Difficulty Selection

Booster is too easy: You've probably outgrown that difficulty level. Try Advanced or explore a more advanced topic.

Booster is too hard: Back up to the previous difficulty level. Review prerequisites if suggested. You might be missing foundational knowledge.

Can't find Boosters at my level: Some niche topics only have content at certain levels. You might need to explore related, broader topics at your preferred difficulty.

Recommendations aren't matching my level: Provide feedback on Boosters by rating them. GapFix uses your ratings to improve future recommendations.

Should I do Boosters at my plan level? Not necessarily. Your plan addresses your identified gaps. Boosters can address other skills, adjacent topics, or complementary knowledge at any difficulty level that interests you.
