Skill gap analysis

Skill gap analysis for your next role, in about 60 seconds

A skill gap analysis compares the skills you have with the skills a role expects. GapFix does it from your CV: pick one of about 230 tech and product roles, add your CV, and see exactly where you stand. No account needed.

The scan is free and needs no account. In the app: 7-day Pro trial, no card, no auto-charge.

What you get

  • Role-fit %. How closely your skills match the role today.
  • Every skill labelled. Missing, Needs work, Refresher or Strong.
  • Quick Wins. The gaps you can close fastest for the biggest lift.

What the four labels mean

The four labels in a GapFix gap report
LabelWhat it means
MissingThe role expects it and your CV does not show it yet. These get the most attention in your plan.
Needs workYou have some grounding, but not yet at the level the role asks for.
RefresherYou have had it before. It needs dusting off, not relearning from scratch.
StrongYou are already there. The plan does not spend your time on these.

The full walk-through is in the help centre: Your gap report.

Why most skill gap tools stop too early

Most gap checkers compare your CV with a job ad and hand you a list of keywords. GapFix is built for people who want the promotion, not a new job. It turns your gaps into a 12-week plan of 15-minute lessons on the leadership and soft skills the next level expects: 1:1s, feedback, running meetings, stakeholder management and asking for the promotion. Skills you're already strong in aren't re-taught.

How to run a skill gap analysis yourself

You can do this on paper. It takes an afternoon and an honest friend. The steps are the same ones the scan follows:

  1. Name the role. One level up from where you are, at your own company. “Senior” means different things in different places.
  2. List what the role expects. Use your company's level guide if it has one. Include the skills that are not in the job description: who you influence, which rooms you run, who you grow.
  3. Rate yourself against each one, with evidence. “I ran the quarterly planning meeting” counts. “I am good with people” does not.
  4. Sort the gaps. Which are missing, which need work, and which only need a refresher.
  5. Pick two or three and plan the practice. A gap closes when you do the thing at work, not when you read about it.

The hard parts are steps 2 and 3: knowing what the next level really expects, and being honest about where you are. That is the part the scan does for you. For the skill lists themselves, see skills by role.

From gaps to a 12-week plan

84 daily focuses, about 13–15 minutes a day, with scenario decisions, AI roleplay and rewrite drills, a weekly quiz and reassessment that re-tunes the weeks you haven't started. A free 2-minute Daily Practice brings back what you're about to forget.

The plan lives in the GapFix iPhone app. If the promotion itself is the goal, read how to get promoted in tech next.

How GapFix compares

Questions people ask

Is the skill gap analysis free?

Which roles are covered?

About 230 tech and product roles, across engineering, product, design, data, program management and engineering leadership. If your role is not on the list you can type it in.
